7. Newfoundlands have webbed feet and are naturally strong swimmers, which is part of why they have a history as water rescue dogs.

8. Dogs are smart learners. The average dog can learn around 165 words, and some especially clever ones learn many more.

9. Dogs have about 1,700 taste buds, while humans have around 9,000, so they experience flavor a bit differently than we do.

13. Cats love their rest and often sleep between 12 and 16 hours a day.

14. Cats cannot taste sweetness, so that dessert you are enjoying holds no appeal for them.

15. When a cat gives you a slow blink, take it as a compliment. It is a quiet sign of trust and affection.

Make It a Family Activity

This puzzle is more than a way to pass the time. It is a chance to talk with your kids about the animals they love. As they hunt for words, read a fun fact or two out loud and ask what surprised them. Did they know a cat cannot taste anything sweet? Or that their dog dreams just like they do?

You can print several copies and turn it into a friendly race, use it at a birthday party or classroom station, or send it home in a goodie bag. Younger children may want a helping hand, while older kids can time themselves and try to beat their best score. However you use it, it is a warm, low-key way to spend a little time together, no screens required.
